Answers to the makeup questions you were too embarrassed to ask
Not everybody is a makeup guru, and that’s ok! It’s pretty normal to not know everything, actually. The cosmetics industry contains a wide variety of products after all, all of which can be used in a number of different and creative ways to achieve classic looks, the latest makeup trends, or anything in-between.

Basically, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by information if you’re new to this world, or have just never taken the time to truly explore it. There are some makeup basics, however, which everybody should know. If you consider yourself a novice, here are the answers to some of the questions you may have wondered about, but were too afraid to ask.

What basic cosmetics should every girl have?

If you’re looking to create a brand-new personal cosmetic kit (or start from scratch as a beginner) you should consider picking up the following makeup essentials:

Lipstick
Mascara
Blush
Concealer
Foundation
Eyeshadow
Eyeliner

Remember, none of the above are compulsory. Feel free to exclude and include any product based on your own personal tastes. If you’re a sucker for the latest beauty trends, for example, you may want to add a primer and setting spray to your repertoire to really optimize your look of choice. If you’re somebody who prefers a very minimalistic style, on the other hand, you can get away with the bare minimum, just picking up Maybelline Color Sensational Mono Eyeshadow, for instance.

Can I sleep with my makeup on?

As tempting as it may be to collapse into bed after a hard day of work (or a late night out partying), sleeping with cosmetics on is an absolute no-no! Failing to remove makeup often results in clogged pores at the very least. Worst of all, skin is prevented from performing its natural process of renewal, which leads us to the next question…

Does makeup cause breakouts?

It can, if it’s not removed before bed each night! Other than that, though, no, makeup does not cause breakouts. Include proper skincare in your makeup routine (before and after), and you should never have an issue in this regard.

Is it ok to match foundation on my wrist?

It’s not! Though you may think the tones are identical, the skin on your wrist and face are definitely different – particularly if you spend a lot of time in the sun. If anything, you should test your makeup on your jawline. This way, you can be sure the shades will blend perfectly with both your face and your neck.

Can makeup expire?

Unopened cosmetics can last for a number of years. Once opened though, makeup becomes exposed to the elements, meaning it can’t last forever. Lifespans differ once the seal has been cracked, so be sure to read our handy guide to expirations, here
