Back to basics Cheek sheet

Blusher, bronzer and highlighter are three makeup essentials that should have pride of place in every woman's makeup bag. Apply them right and you'll look like a contoured goddess. Apply them wrong, and you'll wind up looking like a fashion victim of the Noughties. We’re here to rescue you from a red face – literally. These are the basics that you need to know.

Just like foundation, the right blush application technique isn’t the only thing that matters. The shade you choose will make all the difference, too! Ladies with cool undertones can pull off the pinks and reds whereas those with warmer undertones are better suited to bronze, amber and peach hues. Your face shape will also play a role in how you apply your blush. If you have a longer face, for example, brush the blush onto the apples of your cheeks and extend outwards towards the ear. Soften a square-shaped face by brushing the blush upwards towards the temples.

There’s nothing quite like a bit of bronzer makeup to leave you looking as though you’ve just spent two weeks topping up your tan on the beach in Mauritius! The key here is subtlety – you don’t want to wind up looking like an Oompa Loompa instead. Get the right look by applying your bronzer in a ‘3’ shape on both sides of your face and blending using circular motions.

Highlight your best features with an illuminating highlighter and you’ll feel radiant in a flash! Apply your highlighter makeup with a focus on the bridge and tip of the nose, directly above your upper lip, the inner corners of your eyes and the middle of your chin – and blend using your fingertips.

These makeup must-haves are guaranteed to transform your face and take your makeup game up a notch or two. Remember, practice makes perfect!
