Lipstick is often perceived as the final, and often easiest, step in the makeup application process. We, however, think quite the contrary! Yes, it’s best to leave lippie to last as it’s what’s going to finish off your makeup look, but its application deserves as much time, thought and precision as the rest! So, we’re going back to basics with what lipstick you should be wearing – whether you’re a makeup fundi or not – and how to apply it.

Beginners

So, you’re new(ish) to the makeup scene and prefer to keep things neutral? A nude-coloured lip gloss is just what you need to spruce up your look ever so slightly. Try NYX Professional Makeup in Butter Gloss Fortune Cookie that leaves lips drenched in shiny gloss but without the stickiness.

How to apply

  1. Begin by moisturising your lips with a hydrating cream or lip balm.
  2. Outline your lips using a lip liner in a similar shade to your lip gloss.
  3. Apply your lip gloss, spreading it lightly towards the edges of each lip.
  4. Use cotton buds and tissues to correct any mistakes.

Intermediate

You’re a little more skilled in the makeup department but you’re still not looking to overdo it. We recommend a darker neutral-coloured lipstick that’ll add a bit of va-va-voom to a simpler makeup look. Try Maybelline Color Show Lipstick in Nude Mocha that keeps lips locked through heat and humidity.

How to apply

  1. Exfoliate your lips to remove dead skin cells.
  2. Prime your lips.
  3. Outline your lips using a lipliner in a similar shade to your lipstick.
  4. Apply the lipstick starting from the center of your lips, brushing outwards.

Advanced

We have no doubt you makeup gurus know exactly what you’re doing and the bolder the lipstick colour, the better! You can never go wrong with a deep red and L’Oréal Paris Color Riche Matte in Haute Rouge is sure to get the job done. We love its creamy formula and staying power – perfect for an evening out on the town.

How to apply

  1. Exfoliate your lips to remove dead skin cells.
  2. Prime your lips.
  3. Using a lip liner, outline your lips, lightly colouring in the middle.
Fill in the rest of your lips using your red lipstick.
