Dazzle with your dark side: How to achieve the vamp look
Dazzle with your dark side: How to achieve the vamp look

It’s the only rule breaker allowed: to pair dark lips and equally dark eyes. The vampy makeup look originated in the 90s and uses only three elements: a dark smoky eye, a matte foundation and a dark lip, but it has the power to transform angelic features into wicked works of art.

For the most authentic vampy aesthetic, stick to black, red and purple hues for that dramatic effect that creates mystery rather than the literal undead look.

Here’s how to turn yourself into a glamorous vamp and slay the night.

What you’ll need:

Foundation one shade lighter than your skin tone
Wedge sponge
Black mascara
Black liquid liner
Eyebrow gel
Dark eyeshadow palette (set of three shades)
Dark matte lipstick
A set of makeup brushes

Step 1: Colour choice

Before you even begin to apply your makeup, you’ll need to nail down (or stake!) your seductive, vampy colours. For your eyes that means three complementary shades.Make sure your chosen eyeshadow palette consists of three moody hues, varying from dark to light. Find more eye makeup inspiration here.

Step 2: Eyeshadows

Time to apply! Start with the eyeshadow brush and swab the darkest colour of your chosen three colours across your eyelid. Then take the next lighter shade and apply on the outer corner of your eye, starting from the lash line and brushing up and around the crease line. Finally, pat the third colour, the lightest shade, on your tear duct and underneath your brow bone. Use the blending brush to even out all the colours for a dark and fiery smoky eye. To best achieve this look, use Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette for fiery burgundy and wine colours, or Urban Decay Naked Heat Eyeshadow Palette for burnt and bold black shades.

Step 3: Eyeliner and mascara

Beginning at the corner of the eye on your upper lash, draw a fine line with your liquid liner to your tear duct. Do the same on your lower lash line, using an eyeliner brush to blend and smooth the colour. Finally, apply mascara to your upper lashes by looking down and swiping down in a curl movement, and then carefully swipe your lower lashes. For a 24-hour stay, use YSL Mascara Volume Effect Faux Babydoll

Step 4: Foundation

Foundation only now? It may sound unconventional, but by working on your eyes first, you can avoid the problem of liner, shadow and mascara bleeding into your base and ruining your efforts. Give this different order a try. So, once your eyes are blended to perfection, focus on the rest of your face for full coverage. Only apply foundation once your eye is perfectly blended. Use a matte foundation one shade lighter than your skin tone to create a contrast between the dark and light colours of your look to bring out that eerie vampy glow. L’Oréal Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation is the hook up. Smear foundation directly onto your face, then use a foundation brush to make sure it’s well blended. Use the wedge sponge to reach the inner corners of your nose.

Step 5: Eyebrow mascara

Now to define perfectly bold eyebrows. Use Maybelline Eyestudio Brow Drama Sculpting Eyebrow Mascara and stroke lightly along your natural eyebrow shape until you get a bolder colour. Then use your eyebrow brush to blend until your eyebrows stand out.

Step 6: Lipstick

Outline your lips with a black eyeliner (it’s okay to use on your lips, we promise) and really emphasise the Cupid’s bow line. Then glide the matte lipstick over your lips and plump. For a dark shade, use NYX Velvet Matte Lipstick in Midnight Muse (if you fancy something a bit subtler, wine shades are also very much on trend). Finish off the entire look by colouring in your lips with the eyeliner, because you can never go too dark and plump when going full vamp.

The vampy look is inspired by fantasy, transformation and playing a character, so it’s understandable how tempting it can be to experiment with the shades. One suggestion is to keep the smoky eye quite minimal for daytime by using only two eyeshadow shades, and keeping it contained to your upper eyelid. At night, turn it up to 100 and let out your inner seductress.
