Don’t outdo the bride: How to get a wedding look right
Don’t outdo the bride: How to get a wedding look right

Wedding season is in full swing, and if you’re anything like us, your fridge is already plastered with save-the-date cards and invitations. In spring and summer, it seems like a weekend doesn’t go by without having to come up with another awesome wedding look that will blow your friends and distant relatives away with your glow-up. Add to this the fact that it’s just bad manners to outshine the bride on her special day, and it can become even more tricky to find a makeup look that’s both understated and sublime (and matches your outfit, naturally).

Don’t fret. Pick one of these three fabulous wedding looks and we guarantee you’ll draw just the right amount of attention at your next wedding celebration.

Natural glow with a fuchsia lip

Since many weddings are day-to-night affairs, you’ll need something that goes effortlessly from the ceremony to the reception without missing a beat – and this is the perfect way to do it. A softly bronzed complexion looks beautiful in the sun and elegant at night. Try something like the Maybelline Master Bronze Colour And Highlighting Kit for sun-kissed skin that’s full of life. Pair it with a rich, girly pink colour (we love the L'Oréal Paris Infallible Lip Color in Flawless Fuchsia) for a summer-worthy look that’s fresh and simple.

Metallic eyes

Shimmery eyes have been around for a while now, but a spring or summer wedding is the perfect time to play around with the new direction the trend is taking with bright shades of blue and purple. The best part? Metallics, especially in these bold shades, pop beautifully against the rich pigments in African skin. We don’t see this trend going anywhere anytime soon, so why not stock up with a full palette to keep you going all summer long? Our favourite is the NYX Professional Makeup Cosmic Metals Shadow Palette. Featuring six versatile and edgy neutrals in tones of gold, plum and mauve, this gorgeous set loads your lids with rich, metallic color. Keep your lips nude to really make those peepers pop!

Sunset Everything

We’ve all heard about sunset eyes, right? Fiery reds and oranges are the perfect seamless transition from day to night, and these shades also work wonders for darker complexions, accentuating brown eyes beautifully. So why not let the sun set a little lower – on your lips, for example? Start with a smoldering orange eye shadow like the Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Fireball, for its intense colour and slight shimmer, then go full gloss with gorgeous plump lips in a similar orange shade. Something like the trusty Lancôme Juicy Shaker in Great-Fruit will gloss your kisser to perfection in a grapefruit-like orange that looks effortlessly chic.

Weddings are no time to try to one up the bride, but that doesn’t mean you need to be a shrinking violet, either! Any of these looks, applied beautifully, will have you turning heads when that dancefloor heats up, for all the right reasons.
