Isn’t it funny how your skin always seems to break out at the worst possible moment - like just before a big date, or an important job interview? Ok, it’s not funny, it’s seriously annoying. Whether it’s stress or hormone-related, one thing’s for sure: you want to cover those blemishes up, pronto!
Chances are you’ve used concealer to cover up a spot or two in your lifetime. And chances are, the results have never been quite as good as you’d like. Don’t blame your makeup products - maybe you’ve just been using the wrong technique (or the wrong products) all along! Lucky for you, we have a step-by-step guide to getting it right.
Covering up a pimple the right way
1. Keep hydrated
We don’t mean drink water (though you should be doing that anyway). It may go against your instincts, but to really hide a blemish you need to start with thoroughly moisturised skin. Moisturiser provides a smooth surface for your makeup. If a blemish is dry and flaky, it will be visible, even underneath countless layers of concealer.
Use an oil-free moisturiser so you don’t irritate your skin. If you want to use products that dry out pimples, rather apply them before bedtime when you aren’t trying to cover up.
Like moisturiser, primer helps to create a smooth surface for your foundation and concealer. We recommend Maybelline Superstay 24 Hour Primer. It helps to reduce pores, blur imperfections and create a matte, shine-free finish to your makeup.
Many people think that concealer should be applied before foundation, but actually it’s the other way around. Concealer is easy to mistakenly wipe off when you apply foundation on top of it. What a waste of time, especially if you’ve worked hard to cover up a spot!
Your foundation adds another layer to help hide flaws before you even use concealer. Try L’Oréal Infallible Stay Fresh Foundation - this product offers excellent coverage and staying power. Use a makeup sponge to apply foundation all over your face, taking care to dab gently over any blemishes.
Finally, the product you’ve been waiting to use! We love NYX Professional Makeup Concealer Jar because it has a creamy texture (so your pimple won’t look flaky), full coverage and comes in a variety of colours for different skin tones. Use a shade to match your foundation and dab it on the centre of your blemish. Work outwards, adding concealer around the edges until no red areas are visible. Lightly tap the area with a makeup sponge to blend the colour - but don’t rub - you’ll just wipe the concealer off.
Finish with setting spray or a dusting of setting powder, add mascara and lipstick and you’re ready to face the world - with a flawless complexion of course.
