Makeup forecast: 5 summer looks you have to try
Makeup forecast: 5 summer looks you have to try

Warm, balmy days and festive nights out are the perfect opportunities to test drive some of this season’s biggest shadow, liner, blush, and lipstick moments, inspired by the spring/summer 2018 runway shows. Go big or go home is definitely the key message here and we say, “why not?” Makeup, after all, is all about experimentation and having fun.

Look-at-me eyes

This season’s shadows demand attention immediately, with everything from traffic-cone orange to sunshine yellow swiped across the lids. Pick your colour pop of choice (we love the ‘Lemonade Craze’ shade from Maybelline’s Lemonade Craze Eyeshadow Palette) and use a flat eye shadow brush to really pack pigment onto your lids. The more you layer the shadow, the more saturated the colour will be. Finish off with a few coats of inky black mascara to seal the deal.

Extreme ‘meow’ factor

As far as liner goes, use a creamy black kohl, such as Urban Decay’s 24/7 Waterline Eye Pencil in Legend, and trace your top and bottom lash lines with it, extending it out at the outer corner of the eye to create a dramatic wing. Don’t be afraid to go bold – this look is inspired by Cleopatra’s original cat eye, which was anything but shy.

Make me blush, a lot

This cheeky trend takes blusher to a whole new level with bright-hued blush stretching all the way from the temple down to the cheek in an exaggerated “C” shape. Basically, orange, coral, pink, red or purple blush is used as both a contour and highlighter on the cheeks. You can even combine two colours for a customised look, using one along the cheekbones and another around the temple area. NYX Professional Makeup’s

HD Blushes are our favourites for attention-grabbing cheeks.

Drenched lips

Shiny, glossy lips are making a major comeback and we couldn’t be happier to be bidding adieu to drier-than-the-desert matte pouts. The options are endless here – you can stick to a crystal-clear lip gloss formula or slick a tinted shade across the lips; you can pair your glossy pout with eye shadow or keep it as the focal point of your look. Either way, look for a non-sticky, gloop-free formula like Lancôme Gloss In Love in Just Strauss.

Silver dream

With all the focus being on warm gold and bronze hues lately, it’s nice to see that this cool, refreshing metallic is part of summer’s makeup menu. Pick a chrome shadow that’s free of chunky glitter, such as Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow in Shellshock, and apply it all over the lids, just past the creases. Keep the rest of your makeup minimal; subtle pink cheeks and bare, moisturised lips are all you need to complete this look.
