Pantone is famed as the international authority on colour, who like to challenge the norm by thinking outside the box. Each year, since the early 2000s, the Pantone Institute proclaims the “Colour of the Year”, and we have seen everything from Chilli Pepper and Tangerine Tango, to Serenity and Honeysuckle featured.
This year, the colour of the year is Ultra Violet, and we couldn’t be happier! Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director at The Pantone Colour Institute says, “We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to Pantone 18-3838 Ultra Violet – a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level. From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”
Now we can begin to embrace this vivid and mysterious colour in a variety of ways, and there is no doubt that makeup is a wonderful vehicle to play with this hue. But where do you start? Nobody wants to walk around looking like Barney the Dinosaur, so it’s important to use the colour strategically, and we’ll show you how…
NYX’s range of Soft Matte Metallic Lip Crèmes are an excellent choice in terms of lip pigment. You can choose from 12 different shades, but we recommend Havana for those seeking to invoke Pantone’s Ultra Violet, as it is lightweight, creamy and smells divine, too.
Enigmatic and unconventional, Urban Decay’s Flash is a perfect match to Pantone’s Ultra Violet. Thanks to the Pigment Infusion System™, all of Urban Decay’s eyeshadows have a soft, velvety texture, and are easy to blend, so you know you’re investing in a great product. Pair your violet shadow with a rich cobalt or royal blue and add even more drama to the trend.
If you’re doing Ultra Violet this year, nail polish is a great way to get creative. You can play with nail art here by taking two different shades of purple/violet and creating a polka dot pattern. Check out Essie’s range of amazing colours, like Boho Violet Indigo and DJ-on-Board Ultra Vivid Violet. These shades will work well in combination.
Daring, original and provocative, Pantone’s Ultra Violet is set to dominate the world of style in 2018. So get on board and pump up your makeup kit with purple products – you’re going to need them!
