Sunscreen and makeup: The right way to layer them
Sunscreen and makeup: The right way to layer them

With summer in full swing and plenty of lazy days by the pool, sun protection is a no-brainer, and yet, some of us still forget to apply it. Technically speaking, everyone should be applying sunscreen every single day, come rain or shine, to prevent premature ageing and pigmentation from the sun’s harmful rays. But how do you go about pairing it with makeup without ending up looking like a greasy mess? Read on to find out.

Skincare first

In the morning, wash your face and then apply your daily moisturiser as you usually would. You want your last step in your skincare routine to be sunscreen so that it can shield your face from the sun, so either finish off with a separate high-protection (minimum SPF 30) face product or use a moisturiser that has built-in sun protection. Don’t forget your neck as it is one of the first places to show visible signs of ageing and having a turkey neck is never a good look!

Foundation second

Many ladies make the mistake of assuming that if their foundation contains SPF, it is enough protection from the sun – we hate to burst your bubble, but this isn’t the case! You need to wear an additional sunscreen for optimal protection. Allow your sunscreen to dry for a few minutes and then apply your base products as you normally would on top. We recommend the L'Oréal Paris Infallible 24H-Matte Foundation for shine-free skin or the Lancôme Skin Feels Good Hydrating Skin Tint if you’re after a tinted moisturiser with a little more glow to it.

Final touches

Use a light dusting of translucent powder or a makeup setting spray to lock your makeup in place and apply a lip balm with SPF to ensure that your pout is protected too. Maybelline's Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Balm in Quenched is a great option as it contains an SPF of 20.
