The top 3 trends South African beauty fans can look forward to this summer

Want to be on the cutting edge of the season’s hottest looks – helping to set trends instead of trailing behind? We spoke to David White, National Head Makeup Artist for Urban Decay in South Africa, about the top three trends he sees taking off in summer 2018. Read, learn and then lead!

Lip stain for grown-ups

When it comes to beauty, trends are often cyclical – they appear, vanish for a few years (or decades!) and then return to popularity. That’s certainly the case with lip stain, which is back in 2018 and all grown up. David explains, “The 2018 lip stain is deeper with mature shades of rich berries and oranges; the bleed of tint is cleaner as the shade is richer and more solid

How to get this more sophisticated look for spring? Take a liquid lip, like Lancôme Matte Shaker in Vivid Orange, swatch it over the lip and then dab the pigment all over the surface using your fingertip. Over the course of the day, the shade will wear and fade just like a stain. A bonus tip from David: “To touch up and retain a fresh, juicy effect, layer the lip with Urban Decay Hi-Fi Shine Ultra Cushion Lip Gloss.”

Dewy skin all the way

No doubt influenced by K-beauty trends like glass skin, expect to see a lot more “clean” complexioned women around South Africa in the upcoming months. Just as lip cover is going lightweight, so foundation and full-face are shifting to radiantly natural as well.

David explains the look as “still polished but not textured; think foundation mixed with a pore-perfecting and smoothing primer in equal amounts.” His favourite products to combine in this manner are Urban Decay Naked Skin Liquid Foundation and Urban Decay Urban Defense Complexion Primer SPF 30, as the sheer foundation cleverly disguises imperfections with a blurring agent while the primer provides the perfect glide for a dewy, clear look.

Eyes are your area to experiment

Just as you’re more likely to play with your hair options in the warmer months, you should do the same with your eye makeup this season. Cat eye and heavy mascara are out while thumbprint and stick-on liner in foiled accents are in. Sound a bit too far-out for you? David says, “For a less dramatic take on this look, the Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Liner lets you add a glint of sparkle on the lash line without overloading the lid, although you can build it up as needed.”

That’s one thing you won’t be able to escape this spring either: glitter is here to stay! David’s recommendations are to try washing glitter liner over the eyelid or superimposing it over a classic dark line.

Now that you know what’s coming, it’s time to gather the products you need, master the look and turn heads.
