Neutral products may be the staple of every girl’s makeup kit, but sometimes you want to brighten things up, right? Jewel-toned makeup is all the rage for spring. It’s rich, glamorous and bursting with vibrant colour!

Here’s an eye makeup tutorial on how to apply jewel-toned eye makeup with a selection of our favourite products.

1. Eyeshadow primer

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again. Eyeshadow primer is a must if you’re creating a bright eyeshadow look. It provides a smooth base for pigmented eyeshadow and has a slight stickiness that helps eyeshadow adhere properly to your lids. We recommend Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion - available in 5 subtle shades to give your eyeshadow staying power.

2. Apply jewel-toned eye makeup

Choose a jewel tone and a matching metallic for added depth and shimmer, and apply to your whole eyelid. Blending is essential and can fix all kinds of mistakes and uneven application. Use a fluffy eyeshadow brush to blend and buff the colour until it looks even. Check out Urban Decay for a superb selection of quality makeup brushes.

Add a slightly darker tone of the same colour into your crease to define your eyes and a light application of the same dark colour along your upper and lower lash line.

We’ve used shades of shimmering teal from the 10-colour  NYX Professional Makeup Off Tropic Palette in Hasta La Vista, but you can also try the curated shade families like L'Oréal Paris Color Riche Les Ombres Palette in Rose Memories or Eternal Blue.

Complete the look with Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Junkie (or any of the other 42 gorgeous, eye-popping shades).

3. Lips and cheeks

If you’re wearing bold eyeshadow, it’s important that the rest of your makeup complement the look. This doesn’t mean you should match things up but instead choose lip and cheek colour that neither overpowers nor fades into the background.

smudge of pink lipstick works wonderfully with jewel-toned eyeshadow. Apply creamy lipstick with a fluffy eyeshadow brush for a soft, blurred finish. We love the indulgent Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in Rapture and iconic Lancôme L'Absolu Rouge Cream Lipstick in Effortless Chic.

Finish off with a dusting of rosy, shimmery blush on the apples of your cheeks. Our favourite new product is Maybelline Facestudio Master Blush Color & Highlight Kit - including four shades of blush and a highlighter, allowing for endless, buildable     combinations of soft colour.
